Your journey begins with a pickup at your hotel, the airport, or a location of your choice in Anchorage. From there, we’ll set off on an exciting road trip south toward Whittier, with plenty of sightseeing and photo opportunities along the way.

2. Anchorage City Tour
Before leaving Anchorage, we’ll take a brief tour of the city, giving you a glimpse into the history, culture, and landmarks of Alaska’s largest city. You’ll see key highlights, including:

  • Historic downtown Anchorage with its blend of modern and traditional Alaskan charm.
  • Waterfront views showcasing the stunning backdrop of the Chugach Mountains.
  • Cultural and historical sites that provide insight into the region’s rich heritage.

3. Scenic Drive Along Turnagain Arm – Stop at Beluga Point
Leaving Anchorage, we’ll travel along the Seward Highway,, one of the most scenic drives in North America. This 40-mile stretch runs alongside the Turnagain Arm, offering breathtaking views of mountains, glaciers, and the water below.
Our first stop is Beluga Point, a scenic overlook where you might catch a glimpse of:

  • Beluga whales (during the right season) as they follow the tides.
  • Dall sheep grazing on the cliffs above.
  • Expansive views of Turnagain Arm’s tidal flats and surrounding peaks.

4. Stop at Girdwood – Optional Tram Ride at Mt. Alyeska
Next, we’ll take a short break in Girdwood, a charming mountain town surrounded by lush forests and towering peaks. Here, you have the option to:

  • Take the Alyeska Tram Ride to the top of Mt. Alyeska, where you’ll experience breathtaking panoramic views of glaciers and mountains.
  • Enjoy lunch at the mountaintop restaurant, offering a spectacular setting. (Tram and lunch costs are not included.)

5. Visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Continuing south, we’ll visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a 250-acre refuge dedicated to Alaska’s native wildlife. Here, you’ll have the chance to see:

  • Grizzly and black bears in a natural setting.
  • Moose, elk, caribou, and musk oxen.
  • Bald eagles, wolves, and the rare wood bison.

You can choose to either walk through the center or drive through, depending on your preference. (Entrance fees are not included.)

6. Drive Through Portage Valley to Portage Lake

After our wildlife encounter, we’ll continue down Portage Road, a scenic 10-mile drive through Portage Valley. Along the way, you’ll see:

  • Glacial landscapes and towering mountains.
  • Portage Lake, a breathtaking body of water fed by the surrounding glaciers.

7. Travel Through the Historic Whittier Tunnel
Next, we’ll pass through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, also known as the Whittier Tunnel. This 2.5-mile tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in North America and was originally built for the U.S. military in World War II. It’s a unique and historic experience, offering a fascinating glimpse into Alaska’s engineering history.

8. Short Tour of Whittier & Drop-Off at the Cruise Terminal

Once we clear the tunnel, we’ll arrive in Whittier, a small but important port town with a rich history. Since Whittier is compact, we’ll take a short loop around town to see:

  • The historic WWII-era buildings that once housed soldiers and workers.
  • The scenic Whittier Harbor, filled with fishing boats and cruise ships.

After the brief tour, I’ll drop you off right at your cruise ship, ensuring a smooth and convenient transition to your next adventure.
